in Lyle family : the ancestry and posterity of Matthew John, Daniel and Samuel Lyle, pioneer settlers in Virginia by Oscar K. Lyle " Matthew Lyle was born abt 1711 in Browndodd, Larne, Antrim, Ireland. He was the son of James Lyle and Margaret Snoddy. He married Esther Blair in a church in Larne on 18 September 1731. He migrated to Timber Ridge, Rockbridge (now Augusta), Virginia prior to 30 July 1742. He died in 1774. He had six children: James, John, Elizabeth and Martha survived him and are named in his will. William and Robert, both baptized in Larne (1738 & 1740) predeceased him.
