Alexander was born in Glenwhirry in 1791 and was said to have farmed 'Clatteryknowes'. Married to Esther Erskine (1793-1825 Antrim) with 5 children:

William (1810-1859) farmed 'Clatteryknowes', Glenwhirry married to Mary Jane Barclay (1820-1891), 3 children.

John (1812-1891 Antrim/Australia), married twice: Sarah Ann Dinsmore (1818-1847) and Mary Hyndman (1822-1894), 2 + 4 children.

Samuel (1815-1898 Antrim/Australia), married Mary Ann Watt Andrews (1812-1852), 2 children.

Alexander (1819-1907 Antrim/Australia), married Sarah Esler (1832-1900), 8 children.

Mary Ann (1821-1859 Antrim/Australia), married Samuel Adams (1822-1909), 6 children.

  • This gravestone in Glenwherry Presbyterian graveyard:

    Erected To The Memory Of William Barber, Late Of Clattery Knowes, Who Departed This Life 25th December 1859, Aged 49 Years. Also His Wife Mary Jane Who Died 28th March 1891, Aged 71 Years. Also Their Son James Barkley Barber, Who Died 30th September 1922.

    Letters of Administration of the Personal estate of William Barber late of Clattery Knows in the County of Antrim Farmer deceased who died 27 December 1859 at same place were granted at Belfast to Mary Jane Barber of Clattery Knows aforesaid the Widow of said deceased.

  • Many thanks for providing this information. I will re-visit William's will as I have no record of a son, John or daughter Martha.

    I have added the information I do have re Alexander's family. It is Alexander himself who is my 'problem' ancestor - the little information we have is from an old family Bible but I have been unable to verify anything at all.

  • You will probably struggle to get back much further. The records often simply don't exist. A lot of Irish research comes to a stop around 1800 for that reason. Most of the folk around Glenwherry originated in Scotland in the 1600s but there are no records that far back.
