I’m interested in hearing more about the fox family. Thomas - did he have brothers? My gg grandmother was Ann fox, daughter of William and Anna Marie née Cormick. Anna was born c1827
Daughter of Thomas Fox and Ann Fox, nee Finnan. Margaret was baptized in County Longford, Ardagh and Moydow, in the diocese of Ardagh. I am not sure when her parents emigrated to the US but her sister, Mary Ann Fox, was born in Troy, New York in 1830. Margaret was married on 14 Oct 1841 in West Troy, New York state, USA to Peter Lettice (or Lettis, later Lettus). She died in West Troy, New York 8 Jan 1884.

Lily, I just noticed I also have a baptismal record for Thomas Fox from Ardagh and Moydow. He was baptized 20 Mar 1800 and his parents were Thomas Fox and Bridgit Leonard. Mary Leonard was a witness to the baptism. When Thomas married Anne Finnan in 1824 in that same area, James Fox was listed as a witness. He may have been a brother to Thomas. Dodi

Hi Dodi Thank you!! YOu have actually helped me more than you may realise. I definitely believe we have two different families, but was hoping possible cousins. Fox is a common name but I have found MORE Fox families around Dublin than Longford. I wish we could ALL find out Fox. Our family bible is scant with detail. It is written in the 1800s but the literacy level of the person recording appears low (I was a teacher and can see the struggle). It does record OUR Anna's parents as William Fox who married Maria (of Anna) Cormick/McCormick. Their daughter Anna Fox was born in 1827. My Anna Fox married John Kelly c1857 then moved to Australia with him. But I don't think the info WE have here in our family history is right. We believe Anna was born 1827 - I don't. I don't because she married her first husband John in 1857. NO woman would be 30 when they marry and 32 having their first baby.... back then. She continued having babies into the 1870s. So logic would say she was probably born closer to 1840 than 1827. Maybe someone has picked the wrong entry for birth and thought it was ours. Second, John Kelly, her husband, looked 10 years older than her - even AFTER she had all the babies. But our family history says John was born 1830. His Crimea Paperwork says 1835. NO woman would marry a man 7 years younger - doesn't make sense. I thin he could have been born around 1830. The parish records exist but he is not mentioned - so we obviously have an error here. The naming pattern of the children is weird too. John was a very strict man, tradition was important. His first son was Francis, second son was John James. But we know John's father was Michael. But there IS a son Michael, about 4 sons down, same with Catherine who we thought was John's mum - she is WAY down the list, below John's older sisters Alicia. But Anna's parents - we believed were William Fox and Anna/Maria COrmick. William doesn't get a mention... but if his names WAS James - the one YOU mentioned, THAT would make sense. I will explore. Anna has followed tradition with the naming of her children after her parents. The second son of John and Anna Kelly was John James Kelly - so its entirely possible that William was an alias or nickname. Considering literacy levels were quite low and John's parents were no longer around - transported and mother possibly passed, I am not sure if John named his first son after the man who raised him or his actual father. Hard to know. I actually remember seeing the name FOX on the Crimea War paperwork for Mullingar. I always wondered if that was the same family. From memory James Fox was in the 41st Welch Regiment of Foot - the same as my John Kelly. I wondered if that was his father in law or an uncle. Sorry for the rant, putting the info out there someone else may have the same thoughts. I will go hunting for Fox families and let you know if I find anything. Cheers Katheine
