Back to ListCharles D.O'Connell born 1805 became landlord of Ballynabloun early on in life.It was willed to
him by his father Daniel who died a young man in1811..In 1831 Charles built a walled garden in the centre of
the townland and planted trees along the Gilleagh Stream.He intended building a house within the garden.
However when he married Kate O'Connell in 1832( daughter of Dan The Liberator.) the house was not built in Ballynabloun.
Instead the couple built a mansion,east of Cahersiveen which cost around 3000 pounds at the time.
They sold the big house around 1847 to The Board of Guardians and it was converted into Cahersiveen Workhouse which
lasted up to 1923.Charles and his wife and family left South Kerry and he became Resident Magistrate of Bantry on a salary of 500 pounds
per annum.He died in 1877 and is buried in the family vault in The Old Cemetery in The Glen/St.Finian's Bay,Co.Kerry.His son Daniel Charles
succeeded him as Landlord up until the tenants bought back their farms from 1925 onwards.
