Mary Ann was the second daughter of George and Alicia Douglas of Tinoran and Lowtown, Co. Wicklow. Her eldest brother was William and it was to her younger brother George Douglas that she came to in Amberley, New Zealand.
Her husband John Crampton, (born April 3, 1809) son of Thomas and Mary (nee Moody), died around June 26, 1862. They had had 9 children, 2 had already travelled to New Zealand and the youngest daughter Margaret had died in April 1858, aged just 4. Mary Ann and her other 6 children sailed to New Zealand aboard the SS Metropolis, leaving London on March 4, 1863, arriving in Lyttelton, Canterbury NZ on June 16, 1863. They settled in the Amberley District, North Canterbury and all established themselves as farmers in that area. Mary Ann owned her land until 1891 when she moved to live with her daughter Charlotte at Southbridge, south of Christchurch. She died June, 27, 1891
