M. SCANLAN, Boot and Shoe Maker, Ann-street, Fortitude Valley [Brisbane, QLD] , was born in Ireland in 1854. He went to America at the age of sixteen, learned his trade in New York, and came to Australia after visiting Ireland in 1876. soon after arrival he started his business in the Valley. He makes a specialty of ordered wor, by the excellence of which he has gained a good reputation and enviable connection. He is a member of the Roman Catholic Church and was married in Brisbane in 1879 [to Johanna O'Connor whom he had met on the SS Indus during the voyage to Australia].

In Brisbane, Martin joined his brother eldest brother, Michael Scanlan who had emigrated to Brisbane in 1865; plus his brother Patrick Scanlan, a successful Farmer turned Cab Proprietor who had emigrated to Brisbane some years before; and his youngest brother Denis who arrived in Aug 1875 on the SS Great Queensland and also became a cabbie.
Their parents were James Scanlan and Margaret Crotty of Cappanageeragh, Clare, Ireland.
