James Woods born 1834, Tyrone, N. Ireland to parents James Woods and Catherine McGery. James is my 2nd great grandfather and he married Jane Gordon born 1834 Scotland. James was a Labourer and died 27 January 1864 of a disease, possibly Typhoid. Jane was present at his death and she was pregnant with their 3rd child, who was born in the Strabane Workhouse. They had three children, Sarah born 1860, James born 1862 and John born 1864. Jane and her children lived in the Workhoush until her death in 1874. The oldest child was Sarah age 14. It was Irish relatives who decided she should be sent to an Aunt in New Zealand. So arrangments were made and she was put onto a ship bound for New Zealand. The ship arrived in Lyttleton, Christchurch, New Zealand in July 1874. There is very little information on James and John, though at their age they would have stayed in the Workhouse. I do not know when James left the workhouse but eventually, he went farming and stayed in Ireland until about 1912 when he and his wife and family immigrated to New Zealand. They bought a farm in Ashurst, Manawatu, New Zealand. John left the workouse when he was 14 years old and boarded a ship as a boy seaman arriving in New Zealand in 1878.
