Mary Shields was born in Northern Ireland abt. 1787. She married John Marshall abt. 1805. Their first child, Matilda, was born 06 May 1806 in County Derry. They had two sons, William S. Marshall born 1807 and John Marshall born 1820. Sarah Marshall was born in 1808, Mary Marshall was born in 1813, and Jane Marshall, my great-great-grandmother, was born in 1818.
Oldest daughter, Matilda Marshall... was married to Thomas Herron on 27 July1824, the son of John and Martha (Huston) Herron, in Ireland, according to "The History of Bartholomew County, Indiana 1888 Volume 1" and Matilda's obituary published in the Evening Republican Newspaper of Columbus, Indiana, where the couple eventually settled on a farm in Bartholomew County, Indiana.
Early in May, 1827 Mr. and Mrs. Herron immigrated to the U.S They settled in Erie, Pennsylvania. Two years later, in 1829, Matilda's parents and her siblings immigrated and settled in Erie also, and lived next door to Matilda and Thomas. One sister did not immigrate, Sarah Marshall. I have not been able to find her records. The 1830 Census Record for the Borough of Erie show both families living next door to one another.
Matilda and Thomas Herron stayed in Erie until their first child, daughter Mary A. Herron was born in 1831. They moved to Cincinnatti, Ohio and by 1837, they purchased a farm in Bartholomew County, Indiana.
Mary Shields and John Marshall purchased a 137 acre farm in Washington Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania in 1837 and farmed with their oldest son, William S. Marshall and his wife, Susanna Caldwell and their children. Both families appear in the 1850 Census at this place.
On February 26, 1851, Mary Shields Marshall died of a lung infection according to her death notice in the Erie Gazette newspaper. She is buried in Old Edinboro Cemetery.
