John Lyons was born in County Galway in 1832 of parents James Lyons b. 1802 and Bridget Egan b. 1873 of County Roscommon. He was baptised in Dunmore RC Parish, Co. Galway, Ireland, on 9 Jun 1833. He emigrated to the United States with his parents 1839-1844. By 1850 he was assisting his father on their farm in Asbury, Dubuque, Iowa, and farmed there until 1909, when he built a house in the city of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa and left the farming to his son John W. In 1864 he married Roseanna Reynolds, the daughter of a nearby farmer. They had ten children during their marriage. Roseanna's father, James Reynolds, b. 1798 in Ireland, lived with them during the final years of his life until his death in 1877. John died in 1911 and Roseanna in 1914.
