John Fahy 1843

Back to List

Born abt. 1843 the first record that is certainly him is a census in 1861 St George, Charlotte, New Brunswick where he and his future wife Annie Ash worked on the farm of Samual and Charles Johnson.  They were married in 1862 and Ellen was born shortly thereafter.  He is found in the 1871 census but not the 1881 census.  My great great grandmother was either his last daughter (so the records say) or first grand daughter (so I think).  Annie Bertha Fahy was born 1880 and emigrated to Bangor, Maine, 1900, where she married Chester Clark Jr. 1n 1901.  I suspect Annie Bertha was Ellen's daughter by James Hornibrook of Cork after they worked a farm in Calais, Maine together in 1880 US census.  Ellen and Bertha are in the 1881 St George census...

John fits well the entry in Poor, "Ignorant Children": "A Great Resource," The Saint John Emigrant Orphan Asylum Admittance Ledger in Context, Peter Douglas Murphy, Master's Thesis, Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sept. 1997:

III Mary (40)- Mary (15), Thomas (6) and John Fahey (4), natives of County Galway and passengers on the Sea. were admitted to the Emigrant Hospital, with fever, on 14 October 1847. Thomas was discharged on 4 November. John was discharged on 24 November 1847 (Al ff. 122 and 132).

Another note in the Thesis claims that their father (no name given) was already in Boston.

  • Margaret, how much earlier?  John's mother, Mary, was born c. 1807.

Which son would be named after the father?  If my back tracking to Peter Murphy's thesis recors is correct, then the oldest son was Thomas (b. 1841) and John was the youngest.  Sister Mary was b. 1832.

Did this John and Mary you have emmigrate by 1847?

  • i have not got a lot of dates as they had a large family  with brother and sister John and Mary. ..coming back to your years   do you know what Mary`s maiden name was.  There is  a daughter Bridget Fahey born 1815,  so i think the John and Mary Fahey i have would be born late 1700`s.      I think the maiden name will be the family link.    sorry it`s late so maybe get back tomorrow.   Margaret.

  • OK, I have no idea of Mary's maiden name.  I am not 100% that they lived in Galway, just that that is where they boarded...

All of the DNA relatives I have via Fahy are either in Canada/Maine or in Australia, so I only have the surnames of descendants.

I did have some guesses that it would be Reiley but those DNA relatives are in the area I grew up, so may be locally related...

... I guess I need some new 4th cousins in Ireland!

  • Because i have no dates of the younger children  , its hard to connect.   I know they LIVED   in Crow Street Gort   co. Galway  they were there in the 1851 census        does this fit in at all.     There is a John - could be James  i suppose but i have no dates for him.

  • Margaret, the Fahy's I know and can identify were on a ship and into New Brunswick in 1847, so anyone in the 1851 census in Gort is a cousin of theirs at best.  Thanks!
