Thomas Carroll (Cahill,Caryl) was born in Dublin in 1853 and was baptised at Saint Michael and John on 29 November 1853 to Terence Carroll and Mary Anne Carroll (nee Byrne). He had two younger brothers Terence (born 1856) and Cormack (1859) The family moved to Liverpool shortly after the death of their mother. Sponsors at his baptism were John Doran and Catherine Byrne. He married Mary English in Liverpool on 24th August 1872. They went on to have nine children Terence, Thomas, Mary Ann, Cornelius, Catherine, Rose Ann, James, Margaret and john.
