Looking for relatives of William Barry born in Cork on 17 June 1890 and died on his birthday 1950. He moved to London England and settled in Lewisham, London or possibly Woolwich. He married but also had a second family with my Grandmother who found out about his wife & family on William’s death. I have found a marriage & children but am unable to confirm the date if birth of the William I have found. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks Donna

Hello Donna, I have searched for your William Barry in the 1939 English register and none are listed with the DOB you quoted, was William his known by name or given name, and what is the name of your grand mother, and / or children of the family? Do you have a tree at Ancestry to share?

I am an ex admin for the Barry surname project at FTDNA , and they run a autosomal DNA project along side the Y DNA as per Ancestry or 23andme or FTDNA testing, which has to be loaded into Gedmatch to compare to other Barry families.

From my own experience you need to also search for the surname Berry, there are only a few William Barry in the 1911 Irish census born in and around Co Cork, and the web site for Irish BMD is down at the time of writing which would hopefully would have given more details about his family in Ireland.

If he made a will then there might be a probate record for William, so what I'm saying is that we need more specific details of the two families , and when he left Ireland.

My great grand father Michael was married before he came to England, but didn't as far as I have found have any children in Ireland, but shortly after arriving in Portsmouth he married a local woman and had a large family, so I'm not supprised that there was a second family as legal divorce and seperation were not common for working people.

My Grandfather William Barry was born 17th June 1890 in Cork, Ireland.

He and my Grandmother ( Gertrude Rose Thomas ) had 10 children but they were not married. They lived at 53 Ladywell rd, Lewisham, London, England which was the property they lived in at the time of his death. The first of there children was also William born in 1926. We do not know when Grandad arrived from Ireland.

My Grandfather was married to someone (sorry name unknown) who on his death (17th June 1950) turned up at my Grandmothers house saying she was Grandad’s wife & that he had children with her too. We think they must have lived local to Lewisham. I have found a marriage to an Alice Maud Squires in Woolwich, London in 1915 but cannot confirm if the William Barry she married is in fact my Grandfather.

We have searched and found family in Cork at Rathmore buildings & also Windsor cottages that were properties that the family share between them to this date. On speaking to them they were very reluctant to tell us anything as we think maybe they thought we were looking to inherit something but all we want is to find information on Grandad & also this second family. My Dad Peter was only 6 when Grandad died so have very little recollection of him.
