When Michael MULKERIN was born on August 26, 1867, in Kinturla, Kinvara, Galway, Ireland, his father, Patrick, was 32 and his mother, Honor ("Annie"), was 31. Michael was one of at least 10 children. He came to the U.S. with his parents, siblings, and nephew in 1883 at the age of 15. They left from the port of Glasgow, Scotland on a ship called “Prussian”. They arrived at the port of Boston, but their final destination was New York. They settled in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn.
Michael worked as a stonecutter. He married Mary O'DEA on September 11, 1892, at Holy Cross Church in Flatbush, Brooklyn. His older sister Delia was already married to Mary's brother. In 1894, he became a U.S. citizen. Between 1893 and 1900, records show that he lived at various times on Rogers Avenue, Pacific Street, Vernon Avenue, and the corner of East 39th Street and Canarsie Lane (also known as Avenue C). All of these locations are in the same East Flatbush neighborhood.
Michael and Mary had three children during their marriage; their daughter Mary died of scarlet fever at age 2. He died less than three years later at the age of 32, and was buried at Holy Cross cemetery in Brooklyn. There is no stone or marker, but the cemetery does have a record of the plot. Michael's daughter Mary and brother-in-law Patrick Duane are also buried in that plot. Elsewhere in the same cemetery are the final resting places of Michael's parents and his sister Delia and her husband (also unmarked but listed in the cemetery database).
