I was hoping we may have a connection here. My 2x ggrandmother was Margaret McAllam (have found other spellings) who married Charles O'Donnell in Antrim, Racavan parish, in 1833. Have not found either of them prior to that. Are there any Margarets in your family -- aunt or cousin?

I'm located in the U.S. Therefore, most of my McCallen documentation is from the U.S. and more specifically, the western Pennsylvania area where they settled. I have several Margaret McCallen's identified but all are native to the U.S. I've also noted a number of different spellings for my relatives but have not come across "McAllam". I have not identified any McCallen women who immigratred, only the men. Lastly, I checked to see if there are any O'Donnells in my line but have none documented.
At first blush, there doesn't appear to be any immediate relationships. Feel free to reach out to me if you have additional questions or details and I'll try to assist if possible.
Thanks...

Leo,
Margaret McAllam (?) O'Donnell's 2 sons came to Pennsylvania from Scotland where they had immigrated around 1860. They settled in PA with other friends and relatives and were in Mercer County working as coal miners around the 1880s. They then came to New Mexico and Colorado when land was being given away there. They were coal miners in Colorado.
One of my next research products is to look at their friends and relatives in PA. One cousin has contacted me from the PA family who still lives there.
This is so much fun!!

Kathleen...
Your synopsis is familiar. James McCallen (1836 - 1904 est.) emigrated from Northern Ireland and worked in Pittsburgh a brief time. There are numerous McCallen's (with various spellings) in that area. Ultimately James settled in Mercer County where there is another large contingent of McCallen's. James McCallen was coal miner as well. I have come across bits of information suggesting that this line of McCallen's was originally from Scotland but have nothing conclusive.
As an FYI, I have run across so many McCallens (with related spellings) in Mercer County that I have begun to add them to my genealogy listing. I'm hoping that in my research, that I will eventually be able to tie them all together. So if you have a name and questions, feel free to reach out and I'll see if I have anything on them.

Leo, Until about 2 years ago, I thought my brother, Terry, and I had no cousins on any side of our families near our ages. Our older sisters, Patty and Nancy, had cousins their ages, but we were destined to play tic-tac-toe with Uncle Fred at all family gatherings forever. In the last 3 years, I have been contacted by several cousins from all lines. And one has parents who still live in Mercer County. I will contact them soon and see what they know about any McAllam (?) folks. In addition, I will more closely examine census records.
One research idea I heard recently is any records dealing with an occupation or land records. Another is, of course, to look at public family trees on FamilySearch, Ancestry, etc. I found my dad connected with 10 family trees on Ancestry. it's a funny feeling when something like that comes up! TEN families? Of course, that's not the way it goes -- but an active imagination can be quite creative.

Leo,
We may discover something yet about our families. My O'Donnell relatives were accompanied to Mercer Co, PA, by McKay relatives,. I have suspected the O'Donnells and McKays were from Antrim first, then joined in Scotland during the famine. Since my g-grandfather Chas O'Donnell married Margaret McKay in Scotland, then came to PA, it makes sense that the McKays came along. Now -- if the McCallens were also in Antrim and/or Scotland -- well -- it's certainly worth looking into. Another research project! I'll never die -- there is too much research waiting! Of course, I may be crushed under the piles of paper documents my research seems to generate.

Leo,
I just this morning (Nov 5) looked at this thread and will contact the McKay cousins (also some O'Donnell cousins who have more odds and ends of info) this weekend.
Woo hoo! We just might have something here.

I maintain a seperate family in Ancestry.com for all the various McCallen/McAllen/McCallin/etc. families I have stumbled across in Mercer county. The number of families is rather numerous but seldom do I find that solid documentation that will tie the various families together. I think part of the issue is that the family came over in waves and any solid documentation regarding the relationships remains back in the homeland. In example, my ggrandfather was born in N.Ireland and emigrated to Mercer county where numerous other McCallen families already lived. No doubt one or more of the existing McCallen families assisted him upon arrival but I have found nothing to make the connection. Feel free to send additional names and information as you see fit and I'll see if I have any information that may be of use.
Regards....

Leo --
I haven't given up on this research. Stopped for awhile to re-group and recover from usual winter health issues. Will be back on the trail soon.
