Born in Hillsborough, Ireland. Immigrated to Canada via New York with father George, mother Jane and brothers William John and George in 1880s. Settled in Cookstown, Ontario, Canada. Employed as a saddler in Barrie, Orillia and Thornton, Ontario. Moved to Winnipeg in 1900 to work on North West Mounted Police contract for saddles. Died in Winnipeg in 1930.
Bred hunting dogs. Avid hunter. Married Ellen Ormsby. Had three children: William John (Billy) Finlay, Edith Finlay, and George (Pop) Finlay. Billy and Pop were employed as journalists: Billy was sports editor for newspapeprs in Winnipeg and Vancouver. Pop was Western Editor for Canadian Press.
