Alan Cuningham 1738

Back to List

Alan was born in 1738 in County Armagh and died in 1801 in New London, PA.

He attended Trinity University and had a wife and two children in Ireland but they did not travel with him to Amercia in 1765.  Unknown if they were deceased or divorced but death seems more probable.

He would have been at Trinity about 1756-1760 time frame.

He was Presbyterian and a veteran of the Revolution serving as a Captain in Montgomerys Flying Camp Battalion and commanding the reserve forces for the battle of Brandywine.

He was married to Rachael Menough and had one son, John Welch Cuningham.

I am seeking any information of Alan in Ireland and ancestors.  I have no data other than that in his obituary.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1738
Date of Death 15th May 1801

Comments

  • I generally see the first name written "Allen." His father may have been a Robert Cuningham, born in "Mullabrack, Oneland Barony, Armagh, Northern Ireland," and died 09 Feb 1789 in Spencer, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA. I have not been able to confirm this though. On Ancestry.com, some trees report a second child in America named Ann. But her reported date of birth (29 June 1787) would have made Rachael 52 years old at the time, which seems unlikely. Nonetheless, his epitath statement "twice married, twice shipwrecked, two sons and two daughters" implies another child born in the US.

  • Sorry, I also meant to add that Allen Cuningham was my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather on my mother's side.
