I am  seeking  information on the illusive Walsh family of Tooradoo, Ballyduff in Co Waterford.

I know that Thomas Walsh, the elder (1796-1866)  lived and farmed there. A younger Thomas and William, who may have been his sons, also lived and farmed there, raising their children who were all born in the 1860s and 1870s.

That William Walsh was married to  Ann Cashel and his known children were: Margaret (1865) and Thomas  (1870).

That younger Thomas Walsh  was married to Julia Brackett and their known children were: Bridget (1862), Mary (1866), Michael (1868)  , "Jacobus" (1870) and  Julia (1875).

My great-grandfather Michael Walsh was their contemporary and was also listed as having resided in Tooradoo. He may have been a third  brother.  In 1859 Michael married Catherine Nugent and their known  children were: Mary (1860),  Bridget Theresa (1862),   Thomas (1864), Catherine (b-1866 d-1868),  Ellen (Nellie) (1868), Alice (1872), and Katherine (Kate) (1876).  Before 1882 both Michael and Catherine Walsh were dead, and  their two eldest daughters had already  gone to America where they worked as domestics in Boston. Upon the death of their parents, the remaining siblings were brought to Boston  to be with their sisters.  Witnesses to the marriage of Michael and Catherine were Michael Nugent and Thomas Walsh (elder or younger?) William Walsh certified the deaths of Thoms the elder, and  Michael and Catherine.  God parents of the Michael Walsh children include William Walsh, Ann Cashel, Jullia Brackett, Michael Cashel, Johanna Nugent Power, John Tobin,Mildred Nugent, Ellen Canyon,  Patrick Whelan, and his wife Alice Nugent..   [Patrick Whelan and Alice Nugent had  2 known children,  William (1861) and Patrick (1863)  ]

I  have the history of Michael's children in the United States (Katherine was  my Grandmother)  but  need to hear from anyone who may have relatives who remember Tooradoo and/ or  are descendants of the other Walsh cousins.

  • Hey,

I've been researching my ancestors William Walsh and Ann Cashel (my 3rd great grandparents), and I believe that they may be the same William and Anne you're referencing.

While I'm not sure when you posted this (could be years ago by now!), I'm hoping we can still connect and share some information. I have a few details that might be helpful, and I'm curious about what you might know as well.

If you're still active on this site, I'd be thrilled to chat and see if we can piece together more of the puzzle. Feel free to reply here or drop me a message if you're up for it.

    Thanks so much!

  • re:comments entered August 2023:   I am still active but had almost given up hope.

I have been in touch with living relatives and believe we have traced each other and our relationship properly.  If we can place your William and Ann ( Cashel) Walsh with our list we may all have struck the mother-lode.  How can we communicate directly?

  • Good morning,

I hope your week was good! I'm reaching out to see if you're still interested in communicating regarding my William Walsh and Ann Cashel possibly being the same people mentioned in your post.

While email works best for me, I'm open to other options like communicating through the comments on this post, or connecting on another site (like Ancestry.com) that we can send messages through. Whatever you're most comfortable with!

If you want to know a few more details about the research I've done so far before we communicate directly, I'm happy to provide a bit more information.

Let me know in the comments here how you'd like to proceed!

I look forward to hearing from you!

  • i am so sorry. I have tried and tried to reach you by email and like you have been eagerly awaiting your reply. When I send it after cutting and pasting your address it bounced back saying it was an invalid address.  When I copied it out myself thinking it read LDESANTIS it bounced again.  When I changed it to I (i) desantis it seemed to go thru, I did not rcv the reject notice..  But according to your note below, you didn't get it either.  I am totally flummoxed.  I am not keeping my info secret but as it is a "working hypothesis" I haven't wanted to post it anywhere publicly without solid proofs, lest someone else think its a "done deal"

.I  found most of my info by scouring  the RC Church baptismal records ( at NLI.ie) ,  I went to the originals ( hard t o read) because those posted by various other sites are subject to the errors of the transcribers.  At least my way presented only my own error) That is the source of my origin data, other more modern records filled in what I have.

In short- it is my belief that my (our?) William Walsh was a brother to my great grandfather,   Michael Walsh.  As I may have said, ironically the one birth record I cannot find is Michael's.  So my hypothesis goes like this:  Thomas Walsh (1796-1866) m Catherine Farrell (sp?)  (No data),.  They had at least three sons (other children unknown).  Michael ( ca 1828-1878)m Catherine Nugent (no data); Thomas (1828-1898) m Julia Brackett (no data) ; William (1831-1901) m Ann/Anne Cashel (no data) .Michael could be the 2nd brother after Thomas birth date unknown.  It was calculated from his stated age at death.

If we ever get our communication link set up I can share the rest of the data I have so far.  Currently I am trying to track down Michael's wife, my great grandmother.  The townlands indicated involve Tooradoo, Ballysaggart, Coolishal, knockaldau East and Knockaldaun Weat all in Ballyduff District in NWcorner of Waterford, near tri- county borders of Cork, Tipperary and Waterford. I am eager to see your collection so we can compare.

Please double check your email address as sent.. mine is jclose2@cfl.rr.com.

  • Good Afternoon,

I'm sending this as an email, but also posting it here in case you don't receive the email. I'm sorry, this will be a long one! I'll go over 1. how I think I'm connected to William Walsh and Anne Cashel from Ballyduff, 2.other kids that I've found of theirs, and 3 talk about other bits of information I have.

    1. My 2nd great grandmother is Bridget Landers nee Walsh. Bridget married Patrick Landers in 1898. I was able to get her parents names, William Walsh and Anne Cashel, from copies of her marriage certificate and her death certificate (she died in 1922 in Manhattan).

Neither of these have the town or county she was born in (they just said Ireland), so I was stuck for a little while because of this!

After doing more digging through New York records, I found out that Bridget Landers had a brother, Thomas Walsh, that lived with her and her husband from abt 1900 to abt 1905 in Manhattan.

I was able to find a copy of Thomas's petition for naturalization from 1902, which lists his age as 32 (so he was born in 1870) and the county of Ireland that he was born in as County Waterford.

Then, I started looking for a Bridget and Thomas Walsh, born around 1870 to William Walsh and Anne Cashel in County Waterford, and I found birth records for them from Ballyduff.

    2. I've found 10 kids for William Walsh and Anne Cashel:

    Margaret (1865-1904),

    Bridget (1867-1922) m. Patrick Landers (1874-1916),

    Thomas (1870-1913),

    William (1872-?),

    John (1874-1915) m. Delia Lillis (1877-1943),

    Michael (1876-?),

    Mary (1878-1913) m. Cornelius Murphy (1870-?),

    Catherine (1879-1942),

    James (1883-?),

    Anna (1885-1908).

I know that Margaret, Bridget, Thomas, John, Mary, Catherine, and Anna all came over to and died in Manhattan, New York, but I don't know what happened to the other children or to their parents.

    3. I don't know much about elder Thomas, but I believe that I may have found some records of him and sons Thomas and William in Land Evaluations.

I also think, but am not certain, that Thomas Michael, and William may have had a sister, Bridget, but this is primarily based on matching witness signatures and locations (so not very solid evidence).

I believe that Julia Brackett may have been born in 1839 to parents Patrick Brackett and Margaret Heafy, but that's because the other birth records I found for a Julia Brackett from the area were from the 1870s (so, once again, not very solid).

I'm trying to find out what happened to the other 3 Walsh kids, and more about the parents of both William and Anne.

Looking forward to hearing back from you!
