Jeremiah Collins was born in Co. Cork on the 1st of August, 1847. At the age of 13, he emigrated with his family to America. Though the family originally moved to Ohio, he made his way to New Orleans. It was here that he would meet his wife, Kate Lawton (1856-1924). Kate was the daughter of his employer and they were married in 1878. Jeremiah and Kate set up a grocery store together and had 11 children.

Their first born son, James, would go on to become the father of Michael Collins, one of the astronaunts on the Apollo 11 expedition and the man to take one of the most famous photos ever captured showing the view of earth from orbit.
