Teach Chnoic an Anama aka Solemount House near Carrick-on-Shannon, was named for the townland in which it is situated. Knockananima (alias Knocknamae alias Knockanamun alias Knockanemagh) was the site of an ancient battle and translates as Hill of the Soul(s).
In 1641, Knocananima townland was McDermott territory, owned by Tumaltach Óg Mac Tumaltaigh (aka Tumultagh oge McTumaltagh McDermott) who lost it in the Cromwellian Confiscations to the St. George family. By 1659, only 2 Irish remained on the townland, now occupied by 15 English. Knockananum and Tawlaght were a townland pair.
In 1749, no McDermott was residing here. During Penal Times in Ireland a mass rock stood here. It was later removed to the first RC Chapel at Drumercool, Drumlion.
In 1835, Matt McDermott was the only other landholder recorded here in addition to the squire. Mark McDermott of Macnadille was his brother. Matthew McDermott & Mary Clarke baptised Michael McDermott b.1811, Mary McDermott b.1814, and Terence McDermott (1815-1885).
In 1839, Patt McDermott registered a £10 freehold at Knockananum, Barony of Boyle.
By 1857, the farm was in the name of gentleman farmer, Terence McDermott (1815-1884) who was married to Mary Jane Shanley. These McDermotts sometimes went by the address Solemount. The house was inherited by their youngest son, John.
By 1901, the home of John McDermott (1866-) & Margarent Roche (Maggie Roche of Elphin) m. 1904 was one of only 2 slated houses in Knocananima (both deemed 2nd class). It was recorded as a 6-room house with 6 windows to the front. In 1904, John I. McDermott of Solemount was recommended by John McDermott DC of Drumlion as a candidate for co-option on the Carrick No. 2 District Council in the room of the late Mr Michael J Barrett of Finnor.
In 1911 McDermott's was the only farmyard with a coach-house and two stables. This return also tells us that they had Phibbs relatives.
The 1933 Obituary of Mr James Igoe of Boho Ballintubber (husband of Nellie Phibbs) lists the following as mourners (friends and relatives): Mrs McDermott and Ted, Jack and Margaret McDermott of Solemount. [Roscommon Messenger - 2 September 1933]
