The Muster Rolls c1630, “Men & Arms, edited by the late RJ Hunter does not list anyone of that name in Monaghan at that time.  Nearest was Richard Dichare & John Dicher both in the Bishop of Kilmore’s estate in the barony of Castleraine, Co. Cavan.

The lands of clones monastery and the great church of clones were found by the English in 1587 and were leased to crown servants shortly thereafter                                                                        the old monastery was garrisoned periodically but the land remained under the control of the native irish until after                                                                                                                                  the death of brian macmahon in October 1622                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         settlers began appearing shortly thereafter as the heirs of the early lessees took control                                                                                                                                                                               the foundation of the town of clones can be dated to 1623 when a charter was granted for the holding of a weekly market and two fairs each year                                                                                 the first surviving lease to a tenant on the estate is dated 1635 just 12 years later                                                                                                                                                                                      the leases abstracted here represent the local interests the farmer of the estate and the residents in the town that having survived the centuries in the care of the lennard barrett family and their heirs they are now held by the essex record office Chelmsford
