Michael Sullivan : Short Biography

Michael Sullivan & wife Sabina Joyce arrived in the US somtime in the mid-1840s, possibly Boston. They are my 2nd-great-grand-parents.

From various US Federal & New Jersey State census records, Michael's year of birth has been determined to be about 1810. He died 1872 at his home in Matawan, Monmouth County, New Jersey. There is no known death record, and no info on his parents' names. From various census records, wife Sabina Joyce's year of birth has been estimated to about 1808. Her 1883 death record recorded her parents' were both born in Ireland, but neither name was entered.

In the Dec 7th, 1850 issue of the Boson Pilot, Sabina placed the following advertisement:

Sabina and Michael Sullivan, now living at Holmesdale, Monmouth County, N.J, (from co Galway) are anxious to hear from MARTIN, BRIDGET and JOHN SULLIVAN, their children, who landed in New York July last, and are now supposed to be in Bergen County, New Jersey. Also, BRIDGET SULLIVAN, sister to Michael, who landed in Boston in May, 1849, worked in Billerica until August last, and left for her brother in New Jersey. (end of advert)

Of the children of Michael and Sabrina known to be born in Ireland based on the above advert, nothing more is known about Martin & John; daughter Bridget in 1855 married James Gorey of NJ, they had 10 children.

Also based on the above advert & the 1850 US census entry for Michael Sullivan, I have estimated the following:

Michael, born before 1836
Bridget, born about 1837
John, born about 1838

I am hopeful someone may recognize this family group.

I have done autosomal DNA testing through Ancestry.com and 23andMe, and uploaded both test results to GEDMatch.com and FamilyTreeDNA:

I have been in contact with several Sullivan and Joyce DNA cousins through GEDMatch, but none of us have enough information/documentation to make a direct link at the Michael Sullivan - Sabina Joyce generation.

Regarding FamilyTreeDNA, I have joined both the Sullivan/O'Sullivan and Joyce projects & posted messages similar to the above; am hopeful for a positive response. A male cousin has also uploaded his Y-DNA to FamilyTreeDNA, but no connections found as yet. Also have several matches to some of the same Sullivan and Joyce cousins found on GEDMatch.
