Richard Power : Short Biography

Richard Power was a member of the 1825 Peter Robinson Expedition to Upper Canada. He left Cork Harbour with his family 11 May 1825 on the ship Brunswick and travelled to Quebec. From Quebec he travelled by steamboat and flat bottom river boat to Kingston then Cobourg (on the north shore of Lake Ontario) and by land and river to Scott's Plains (the current day Peterborough, Ontario, Canada).  

From Scott’s Plains he was granted seventy acres of land in the Otonabee Township (N lot 23, concession 12), a cabin and provisions for 18 months. Provisions included: one pound of salt pork, and one pound of flour per day (per adult); a cow, an axe, an auger, a handsaw, a hammer, 100 nails, 2 gimlets, 3 hoes, 1 kettle, 1 frying pan, 1 iron pot, 5 bushels of seed potatoes, and 8 quarts of Indian Corn.

His ship was one of nine in the expedition. The expedition involved 2024 emigrants selected to ensure a cross section of trades, occupations and callings suitable to ensure the survival of a settlement in the vast Canadian woods.
