On 17 May, 1877, Margaret McDermott (1856) of Cloonybrennan, age 21, married Phelim Hanly (1851- ) of Clooncullane (just 2 townlands south of Cloonybrennan). Phelim Sr. was the son of James Hanly of Clooncullane, south of Elphin, near Strokestown (Creggs parish). Margaret’s address was given as Tansyfield, and her occupation “housekeeper”.

Of the 15 children born to Margaret & Pheilim Sr., less than half of them survived infancy. By 1901, 8 were living, however by 1911 baby Bridget was no longer with them.
Cloncullane was home to 5 Hanly and 3 Conlon families in 1901 and 1911. Their eldest daughter, May, married a Conlon neighbour. Their eldest son, James, died in 1906 age 21.
The circumstances of the suspicious death of their son, Phelim, lead to one of the longest and most sensational murder trials in the history of the Irish Free State in 1933-34.
