Thomas was born about 1857 in a townland close to Ballyhaunis, County Mayo. His father was Patrick Fitzmaurice. He first appeared on the census for England in 1881 where he was lodging in Blackburn, Lancashire. Later the same year he married a Margaret Fitzmaurice whose father was Walter who had been born in Castlebar. Margaret was from Blackburn and we think was related to Thomas as a 3rd cousin.
