Robert Caldwell Snr (my g/g/g/g/g-f) was born ca. 1735 at ?, Co. Antrim, Ireland, with "Belfast" being given to me by the UEL Quebec Branch Archivist, but with no primary evidence provided. He married Sarah H. Todd in ca. 1760? They migrated to America, either in (a) 1761 (as noted on an application seeking compensation for loosing their farm at Upper New York Province after joining Gen. Burgoyne @ The Battle of Saratoga 1777), where they would have somehow linked up with the 1764 Cahan Exodus led by Dr. Clark from Ballybay, settling with them on Turner's Patent (1764) at White Ck./New Perth now Salem, Washington County, New York State or  (b) 1764  when Robert & Sarah would have left with the Cahans Exodus of Ballybay from Newry, Ireland, as a "Robert Caldwell" is named on the Group's "Head of Household" List. They raised 5 children (John Todd  b. 1763, James b. 1765, Andrew Todd b. 1767?, Elizabeth b. 1770 & Robert Jnr b. 1772) with a "William b. 1760" being suggested but never acknowledged when the family migrated to Canada in 1779, after Robert was released from 18 months imprisonment for refusing to swear allegiance to the 13 Colonies and upon returning to his farm was threatened with death by "Mad" More/Moore, a neighbouring farmer. In 1784 After spending 5 yrs in a Canadian refugee camp, Robert took up the offer of land in 1784 at Cox Township, now New Carlisle, Bonaventure Co., Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec, where he farmed, built boats and became a senior citizen of some importance. Through his children the Caldwell name extended to some 200+ descendants for a time in the local area.

N.B This Information was provided by Robert Charles "Bob" Caldwell, whose g/g/g-f Charles Campbell Caldwell m. 1842 Margaret Jane Symington (b. 1819 Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Nthn Ire.) in Sydney, NSW Australia, but who hasn't been able to establish in what capacity & when  Charles arrived in Australia. Coming from a very strong marine background maybe a clue to gaining ibackground information to his arrival in Australia.

New Type Reply: I, too, have seen on Ancestry.com that Robert Caldwell and Sarah Todd were parents of William Caldwell. However, William Caldwell was born in 1763 in Antrim, Northern Ireland. If so, they could not have left until 1764.
New Type William Caldwell was a good friend of Josiah (Josias) Foster (Forster, Forrester) They traveled together from Huntingdon County, Pa. to Erie County, Pa. Between them, each family had ten children. Five marriages resulted from those children!
