Edward METCALF, [Sr.], was born ca. 1818, at Ballymurtagh, [near Avoca], County Wicklow, Ireland.

He was baptized on 8 Dec 1822 at Old Castlemacadam Church, County Wicklow.

His parents were: Peter METCALF and Elisabeth (THENSE or THAMES or HENNESSEY?)  both born in Ireland

Edward METCALF [Sr.] and some of his family members emigrated to America ca. 1847.

He married 1st Jane (KEAN/CAIN)  KEARNEY, a widow, on 11 Aug 1848, Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan. She was the daughter of Hugh KANE and Bridgetta KENT of Ireland.

Edward and Jane METCALF had two children: Elizabeth and Peter.

By 1850 the METCALF family was living at New Diggings, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, USA where Edward was a miner. His father, Peter METCALF, and brother, Peter METCALF, [Jr.] died of cholera that summer in New Diggings, Wisconsin.

Some of Edward METCALF's brothers, William and Samuel Metcalf moved to Plumas County, California about 1855 and became gold miners. Another brother, Henry Metcalf became a miner in Montana.

After Jane METCALF’s death ca. 1863, Edward married Margaret DAVIS, ca. 1864. She was born in  County Galway, Ireland, ca. 1842, and was the daughter of Peter DAVIS and Winifred (KANE).

Edward and Margaret Metcalf moved to Shullsburg, Lafayette County, Wisconsin by 1860 and eventually had 11 children. Edward Metcalf, Sr. was a farmer.

Edward METCALF, [Sr.] died on 11 June 1900 in Shullsburg, Wisconsin due to injuries he received two weeks previously from being thrown from his buggy.  The funeral service took place from the Congregational Church.

He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Shullsburg, Wisconsin next to his wife Margaret.

Quoting from his obituary Edward Metcalf [Sr.] was described as "a hale fellow well met, who made many warm friends, rough-spoken but under it all lay that honest frankness which so few people have in this day and generation and which made him liked and respected by all who knew him."

Note: One of Edward Metcalf, Sr.'s granddaughters, Genevieve (Metcalf) Johnson saw Edward Metcalf, Sr.'s Bible and wrote the following: 

". . .he made various entries, such as his mother departed in 1847. Her name was Elizabeth. In the next 3 following months, another Elizabeth, (possibly a sister Sarah, [and] Mary Ann died).  He [Edward Metcalf, Sr.] was born in Ballymurtagh, Co. Wicklow, near Dublin. His cousin, Elizabeth, Ballymorrow Tracy- ??? works Co. of  Dublin.

"In it [the Bible] he [Edward Metcalf, Sr.] signed the pledge not to drink intoxicating liquors for three years. He wrote it upside down!"
