Kitson from Ennis Co Clare

The baptism records for the RC parish of Drumcliff (Ennis) begin in 1841, and the marriage records in 1837. The clarelibrary.ie is a good site to find Clare records.

While I did not find any records of the names you mention, I did find these...maybe they are relations:

Eliza Kitson, 10 Nov 1842, parents - Henry Kitson & Johana Doherty, sponsors - Michael Kitson & Maria Doherty

Ellon Kitson, 6 May 1845, parents - Henry Kitson & Mary Tobin, sponsors - Thomas Kerin & Honor Nihil

No residence listed for either above baptism.

Thomas Kitson, Ennis & Bridget Cassidy, Ennis married on 25 Feb 1879, witnesses - John Scanlan & Bridget Morrissy

William Kitson, Ennis & Bridget Conole, Ennis married on 20 Feb 1855, witnesses - David Power & Bridget McMahon

Clare Castle & Ballyea - The Parish Remembers by Eric Shaw (Clarecastle) - Clare Roots Society - 2011 records the following in the Killow graveyard which is South of Clarecastle Village.

Kitson - Ann 6th July 1817 - Thist tomb was erected by James Kitson in memory of his beloved wife Ann Kitson.

Also - Kitson - Derreen - In loving memory of James, Mary Anne, Lawrence, Susan, Henry. Years not recorded.

The surname Kitson was mainly in Killard, West Clare in the 1850's.,

Thank you for this informaiton. Unfortunatley I cannot say for sure if any are related. The early South Australain marriage certificates only required a persons name and not other family history. Unless a Kitson family in Ennis knows of relatives coming to Australia - I have no chance.

When Henry Kitson died the obitutary only said "relatives in Ennis" had been notified. 

One day I might know the brick out of this wall.

Attached record of a Henry Kitson to Adelaide 1854.  Age 25 years and from County Clare.

A Henry Kitson is recorded in the Valuation Records in 1844 in Clonroadbeg. This is vague, as the main town of Ennis is in Clonroadbeg. The river Fergus divides the townlands of Clonroadbeg and Lifford.

The more information you Post, may jog memories of relatives and former neighbours.

Henry had a House, Offices and Yard . Valuation £16. Offices could mean a store!

What year did Henry die in Australia. The first name "Henry" was very popular in the Ennis area and West Clare.

Dear McCoy - thank you for your posts. Henry Kitson died at Mt Barker South Australia on 28th June 1905. He was a dairy farmer. Would the parish marriage be anywhere near the links you sent me? Regards Pauline

Henry's background:
Marriage information for his brother John is taken from The National Library of Ireland, Catholic Parish Register.

John's marriage details are from the hand written Parish Record - microfilm 02474/02 page 37.
Although the handwriting is not clear it looks like John Kitson married Bidy (short for Bridget) and the witnesses were Henry Kitson and possibly Martin O'Loughlin.  

If this is correct Henry Kitson would be John's younger brother who also came to Australia, and Martin O'Loughlin would be Bridget's brother.  Information from the Catholic Church Archives in Adelaide in 1980 lists a Martin O'Loughlin as a sponsor for Bridget's son Patrick.

Death notice said he came from Ennis, County Clare, Ireland - this detail fits with John's marriage record where John & Bridget were married at Doora and Kilraghtis Parish, north-east of the town of Ennis.

He sailed in the "Confiance" from Plymouth, 10 June 1854, arriving Adelaide 12 Sept 1854.

I have viewed the entry you mentioned on the marriage of John Kitson. It is very poor.

I will try and get a transcription from the Clare Genealogy in Corrofin. They have many church records. Hopefully they will have 1851.

Do you have the death records of Henry Kitson and John Kitson?

A great uncle of mine died in Brisbane area in 1910 and his death certificate records his family, including his father and mother.

Hopefully the certificates of Henry and John Kitson will show similar.

Sadly : I have been researching my Kitson family before the internet with many trips to Adelaide South Australia to see original documents.

Adelaide was not a convict settlement and so the records are not detailed. When Henry died in 1905 the SA death certificates did not list a parent - same for John.

Henry had a lot of children but only two still have family living and it seems no records - so I am looking for the magical Irish person with some family history. 

I really appreciate all your help - after 40 years of my searching it still might end up a brick wall but I live in hope. Pauline

Please see attached record for a Henry Kitson in High Street, Ennis. 

The record is for 1844 - Griffith's House Valuations. It would appear that he carried on some business at that address which is adjacent to the Town Square in Ennis. It is possible that he had died or moved away, as he is not shown in later records. His name is recorded below James Raleigh.

It shows that we have confirmed a Henry Kitson/Kittson in Ennis, but no knowledge of his family.

Hi McCoy - interesting and all information sometimes connectes but not immediately. My Henry came to Adelaide and operated a dairy farm so my feeling is that maybe not but could still be a relative. Regards Pauline

The Clare Journal Newspaper reported the death of Henry Kitson in its issue of January 31st 1848.

"Death in High Street of decline of Mr.Henry Kitson, Cloth Merchant".

Henry the cloth merchant - dont think he is ours.

Both my Kitsons on the shipping records said labours or ploughman - that could have been a requirement of acceptance - although Henry was a dairyman and John was a carpenter. 

Where ever they were previously they survived the "the great hunger".

Hi Pauline,

In relation to Henry and John Kitson, it was common for farmers sons to offer their services to other farmers.

Pat Kitson, Derreen was a Poor Law Guardian for the Ennis area while John Kitson, Ballyvonnavaun was leasing c45 acres of land and was also an agent for farm seeds.

It would appear that John Kitson named his eldest son "Patrick" ?

Yes John Kitson's first son was Patrick, second child. First child daughter Catherine

Henry Kitson first son Thomas - 5th child was a son Patrick.
