William James McKeown

William James McKeown 1830

Back to List

Lived in Banbridge, County Down.

William (James?) McKeown and Jane Russell were probably married around 1855 as their son William McKeown was born about 1857. Their son William moved to Glasgow, Scotland and married there, however there is no record I have found so far that the parents also moved to Scotland.

I have found a record in Ireland Civil Registration Deaths that seems to fit, which shows a 'James' McKeown passed away in Banbridge registration district, Apr-May-Jun 1895 at an age of 65. Right age (born about 1830) and district.

I also found a record in Ireland Civil Registration Deaths that seems to fit, which shows a Jane M'Keown passed away in Banbridge registration district, Jan-Feb-Mar 1890 at an age of 55. Right age (born about 1834) and district.

His son William (born about 1857) had conflicting name information about the father (born about 1830), who he said was a Hand Loom Weaver. The Scottish census from 1891 for the son William says he was born in Banbridge, Down.

Son's Marriage record: father was named William McKeown and mother named Jane Russell.

Son's Death record: father was named James McKeown and mother named Jean Russell.

I understand that Jane and Jean can be used interchangeably, but I don't know how William can become James.

Since father and son were both named 'William' perhaps 'James' was the father's middle name or nickname to distinguish father and son?

I have some old family photos with one showing a lady on a street, don't know who it was or when (maybe 1940's), but it just says 'Downpatrick' on the back which is not far from Banbridge, so probably there are relatives in Downpatrick also?

There was a marriage of 'William John McKeown' to Jane Russell in Killinchy, County Down, about 30 miles east of Banbridge on 01Nov1850. However I don't see how this could be them for the following reason: This couple appear to have moved to Glasgow and had children there as shown in Scottish baptism records. Children were Jane in 1856, John in 1859, Margaret in 1860, but no William. Our William was supposed to be born in Banbridge about 1857 (based on the 1891 Scottish census). Otherwise the names and marriage date / location of the parents seems to fit. There were death records for James and Jane McKeown in the Banbridge district that seems to fit though if they stayed in Ireland. I don't know what to make of this. Again, conflicting information makes this challenging.
