I am researching the Salter family that emigrated to the US in 1846. I have information that says they are from Ballybane East in County Cork. Could you tell me if this is farmland or a town? They were farmers when they came to the US. What town is closest to this area? Where should I look for more information on this family in 1820 and before?
Thanks.

You might want to check the free website Irishgenealogy. Search Church Records.

Ballydehob https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballydehob is about six miles south of Ballybane East.
There are two RC parishes in the area: Schull East and Schull West. Records for East start in 1807 while Schull West starts in 1827. As Mary indicated go to irishgenealogy.ie to see if your Salter family has records.
