The Mannionscollection.ca has recorded the history of the Irish to Newfoundland, Canada.

It appears that Quigley ancestors came from Ferns Parish in Wexford.  The most definitive information I have is on Johnny Quigley who was born in 1757 and died in 1810.  He was a teacher who settled in Grace Harbour, Newfoundland.

Any suggestions on where to look next would be most welcome.  Thank you.

Jill

  • FYI, in the 1700's a lot of Quigley's were still spelling the name as Cogley. For example, Thomas Cogley could be Johnny's brother or cousin. I see that Thomas was having children in the late 1700's in Wexford.

    I believe that what you are saying is that you have confirmed that your branch of Quigley's came from County Wexford. What info do you want to learn specifically?

  • Hello R Quigley

    Thanks so much for this information.  You are the first Quigley with which I have made contact. I am aware that various spellings exist of Cogly and Cogley.

    My step-son is turning 30 this October and I am compiling the Quigley family history for him as a surprise b-day gift.

    I have confirmation that Matt's 4x great-grandfather was Peter QuigleyCogley Jr. who was born in Bree, Wexford in 1815 to (supposedly) a Peter Quigley Sr. and Catherine Breen/Brine/Brien.

    An extensive search of Irish Newfoundlanders was conducted by John Mannion who generously shared all his research through the Mannion Collection, which is where I retrieved the above information.

    However, I have been unable to source the birth or baptism of Peter Quigley Jr. in Bree, as I have only been able to access parish records from 1816 onwards.

    Peter Jr. married Alice Jackman on October 31, 1840 in the R.C. Basilica in St. John's Newfoundland and produced the following children:

    1884 - Mary; 1846- Thomas; 1848 - Catherine; 1851 -  Peter William; 1856 -  Alice

    My understanding of Irish naming practices is that the first son is named after the father's father. ie. Peter Jr. father.  The above would indicate that Peter's father was Thomas. The other five namings make perfect sense.

    My research covered a number of parishes Taghmon, Enniscorthy, Adamstown, New Ross, Killegney,Wexford and Davidstown and I did locate the following:

     Peter Cogly born 1815 to Michael Cogly and Ann Fortune in Wexford, Wexford;

    Peter Cogley born 1810 to John Cogley and Catherine Codd in Davidstown, Wexford;

    Specifically I would like to 1)  confirm the parentage of Peter b.1815. and 2) connect with other Cogley/Quigley families who came to Newfoundland in the 1700's and 1800's.

    In the interim I have joined the Family History Society of Newfoundland in the hopes of finding more at the Canadian end.

    Wish me luck.  If you any further contacts you could share I will happily exchange information with them.

    Regards,  Jill from Canada
