I am in search of relatives of Thomas Claudis Wallace, b. 06 Jan 1806 on "banks of the Black Water River" in County Cork Ireland.  He emigrated to the United States around 1825 and eventually settled in eastern Iowa.

  • Hi Paige,

I do not find any birth records at RootsIreland.ie for a Thomas Claudius Wallace in County Cork between 1790 and 1810 (but it is possible that the records for County Cork are not complete), nor at Ancestry.com.  There is a marriage record (possibly his parents?) from 1795 for a Thomas Wallis in Mallow, which is a town on the Blackwater River.  But you would need better information to place him specifically.  My guess is that the marriage is not his parents, but impossible to know.  The Blackwater River is quite long.  The river runs through Fermoy, Mallow and Youghal in southern Cork.

From what I can see, I believe you are looking for Thomas Wallace who lived in Otter Creek, Jackson, Iowa. Am I correct?  He has quite a few children and you could possibly figure his father's name.  If you find his father's name and marriage you can find his siblings. His siblings may have more specific information about their parish or area in Cork.  Using the Irish naming convention might help.  According to family tree at FamilySearch.org, Thomas Claudius Wallace emigrated in 1846.  It is impossible to know how accurate that information is.  I believe he married in 1850.

    Traditional Naming Pattern

    • First son usually named for the father's father.
    • Second son usually named for the mother's father.
    • Third son usually named for the father.
    • Fourth son usually named for the father's eldest brother.
    • Fifth son usually named for the mother's eldest brother.

There is also probate file, see below.  This document is the appointment of the Administrator, James Wallace.  If you can find the entire probate file you might be able to glean some information from it.  Iowa is a state with incredible genealogical resources, especially on the local level.

Unfortunately, without a parish or townland, he is difficult to trace in Ireland.  But other records might help such as a published obituary, his land grant (did he get a land grant?) or probate documents.  Any of these documents might give a more specific place in Ireland.

Let me know if I can be of additional assistance.

    Best regards,

    Marsha
