I am looking for information about my grandfather and his family. His father Benjamin Hewitt and his mother Mary Ann (Brindley) Hewitt were born in England but came to Ireland where they had their family before emigrating to Canada. There were 7 boys and 1 girl. Walter, Geoffrey, Albert George (my grandfather) (born July 23, 1873), Ernie, Bryer, Rex and William and Edith. I have been told that they lived for some time on an estate called Summer Hill House, Roscrea, Kings County, Ireland. They all emigrated to Canada in 1892 with the exception of Walter who went to South Africa. I am planning a trip to Ireland this summer and would like more information about my family before I get there. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Bev,
Here’s a link to Thomas birth in 1870:
Probably the same birth ( ie registered twice):
Arthur in 1871:

Edith’s birth in 1875:

Summer Hill is the name of the townland where the family farmed. It’s probably not the name of a specific property. There are several townlands named Summerhill in Ireland. This one appears to be in the civil parish of Rathnaveoge in Co. Tipperary. 382 acres in size. In Griffiths Valuation (1851) there were 15 homes in the townland. You can use the maps on the Griffiths site to see exactly where the townland was situated.

Alfred & Alberts’ births mention Gorraun in Summer Hill as where the family lived. That may narrow the search for the property. The Valuation Revision records in the Valuation Office in Dublin may help identify the precise plot number in the townland.

Hello, my name is Jennifer. My great grandfather is Benjamin Hewitt. I live in Canada. I’m researching the history as well. There is a family website that will give you a very detailed history on Benjamin Hewitt as well as the Brindley and Eaton history. There are several photos, including some of Summerhill house. I can’t seem to get the link to post but hopefully if you search “Milligan-White Family History” you can get it to come up. I have a lot of details and photos added to my family tree on the Family Search site as well if that doesn’t work!

Hello Jennifer. Benjamin Hewitt is also my great grandfather. As I posted above my grandfather is Albert Hewitt. Which of the siblings is your grandparent? I also live in Canada. I am travelling to Ireland this summer and have located Summer Hill Estate and plan to visit Roscrea where it is located. I haven’t done a lot of research on the Hewitt family. Which family search site do you mean where you say you have photos, etc. I have seen the Milligan/White Family History, thank you for that information.

Hello Bev,
I mistyped and omitted a “great” in regards to Benjamin. His son Reginald is my great grandfather, Reginald’s son Aubrey being my Grampa.
I’ve spent a lot of time out in Bon Accord where they settled from Ireland in the last month.
I’m so glad the info helped you!
I have also spent a lot of hours trying to crack the history of the Eatons in Derby as i find them fascinating. They are a few generations up from Benjamin on his mother’s side. Three of them worked at the famous Derby Gaol and were politicians.

Is the site i’ve been working through my tree on.
Hopefully you can find it there 😊

Hi Jennifer. I will see if I can open your link and find your information. Thank you for that.
I was born and raised in Bon Accord and stayed to raise my children there. We only moved away in 2010. My mom and dad were in the Bon Accord/Gibbons area until they died, dad in 2015 and mom in 2022. I remember Aubrey but more so his brother Marshall and his wife Alice who was my school teacher at one time.
We are going to Ireland next month and will be visiting Summer Hill Estate in Roscrea where all the Hewitt children were born and lived until they came to Canada.
That is interesting about the Eatons side of the family. I hope to one day travel to England and also to Scotland where my paternal grandmother was born.
Thank you again for the information and if you would like to pass along any more info that you discover you can leave it here or feel free to email me at bevtomanek@gmail.com
Take care - Bev
