I'm hoping a Sligonian will be able to help me locate the townland of Collesford the seat of the Colles Family in the 18th century.  Dudley Colles' Will dated 1739 states that he is "of Collesford Co Sligo" however, it nowhere in the documentation or related Deeds describe the Barony in which Collesford lies.  Irish Townlands website does not include Colllesford so I assume the name was replaced or reverted back to it's original after the Colles family died out or went broke!  Dudley also held land in Maghrymore (presumably Maghermore) barony of Levny and Castlegal Barony of Carbury.  Anthony Colles also held land in Castleconnor Barony of Tieneragh (Co Mayo) although it is listed as Sligo in the Deed records. Any evidence of the Colles family in Co Sligo would be much appreciated.

    I checked the Tithe listings on the National Archives site and in 1824 there was a Farrel Colles who leased 92 acres of land in Knockroe townland in Ballysumaghan civil parish.

    When you hit the link, Farrel is hard to find but he is listed on the right hand column towards the bottom.

  • Thank you everyone for your help.  You may be interested to know that the Colles families had land in Sligo, Kilkenny and Wexford.  The Kilkenny branch is the line of Dr Abraham Colles famous for the Colles fracture - a common Rugby wrist injury. The Colles' came to Ireland in the early part of the 16th century from Leigh in Worcestershire and also Warwickshire as part of the last push by Elizth 1st to plant the rebellious counties of Ireland! I think they started in Roscommon first of all and spread out thanks to intermarriages.  I have always loved the mountains of Sligo and having found Collinsford and other mentioned townlands I can see the close proximities to beautiful Cope Mountain.  Thanks again for all your help
