Hi.
I'm looking for help finding information regarding my great grandfather Stephen Hogan. He was born in Ireland around 1862/64 and the 1901 UK census record (listed under Hoghan, spelling mistake) states Dublin.
By the 1911 census he is widowed and living with John James (my grandfather), and another son, also Stephen.
His wife was Margaret Ann Shepherd, married before she lived with Stephen to a Daniel Fazenfield. I can't find any marriage entry for Margaret and Stephen and it looks like they never married, although the 1911 census says they were together for 17 years.
They lived in Liverpool. There is another Stephen Hogan in Liverpool born around this time but in Middlesex and part of a family of coopers. I'm sure this isn't my ancestor as he appears on the 1901 census with another family entirely (just adding this to rule it out).
Hoping to break this brick wall and find out where he was born here in Ireland.
With thanks,
Liz Hogan

Liz:
I searched two different sites which have Dublin RC church records and the only Stephen Hogan baptismal record I could locate was in 1848 which would appear to be too early for your ancestor. We could expand the search but the problem would be not having his parent's names which would allow us to confirm a record if available.
Have you considered a DNA test/ Possibly you will have matches on your Hogan line who have more information on the family and the origins in Ireland.

Hi Roger.
Thanks for your help. I have done a DNA test through Ancestry and I am also using My Heritage and Gedmatch. There are Hogans in match trees, but my lack of ancestor information beyond Stephen is making it really difficult to work out who is who. I'm still learning and hopefully will have a breakthrough at some point. Is there anywhere in Dublin I might get help? I could head up there one day if so.
Thanks again.

Liz:
The available church records for Dublin and the surrounding area are available either on the free site irishgenealogy.ie (Dublin city) and the surrounding areas are available on subscription sites like Roots Ireland. Civil registration of births started in 1864 and the records are also available for free at irishgenealogy.ie I just checked and there were no Stephen Hogan records for all of Ireland in 1864 and only one in 1865 in Co. Tipperary.
So to answer your question directly, I don't think visiting the National Archives will be of help to you.

Hi Roger,
Thanks again. It's as I suspected, any record help is what I've already looked through online. I'll concentrate more on the DNA matching side of research and hopefully get some clues.
