Hi. I live in Australia and am a member of IrelandXO ... my profile is '4th generation Aussie Irish'. I wonder if you could answer a quick question please. I am writing my family's history.

I have a 1823 record of my 4xGGF's tithe record in Kilshane, Tipperary (attached) but cannot identify how often the tithe is paid  .. annually, monthly etc.   His name is Timothy Ryan.

Your assistance is appreciated. Pat Saunders.

  • Pat,

I am unable to give an account of when and in how many parts the Tithe was paid. The National Archives may be able to assist.

I attach some detail on the history of the Tithes 1823 to 1832 and the views of the English politicians on the matter.

    Regards,

    McCoy

  • “Researching Farming ancestors in Ireland” by William Roulston has a chapter on the tithes (chapter 6).

Originally the tithe was an annual payment of one tenth of a landholder’s produce, and it was paid in kind. However the ways in which they were paid varied across Ireland with Munster for example having potatoes tithed but not in some other areas. From 1735 onwards pastureland was exempt.

The system was revised in the 1820 as a result of pressure for reform and an annual monetary payment replaced payment in kind. Pastureland was now included.

“Finally in August 1838, an Act of Parliament was passed which converted the tithes into a rent charge with the landlord,  rather than the tenant, given the responsibility for paying this.” (Roulston page 108).
