I have come across a census return from Liverpool in 1861. The place of birth is given as Ireland, Dunbar. Can anyone suggest where this might have been as I can find no place with that name in Ireland. Thank you.

Kathryn,
There are two records in the 1851 Irish census: Both in County Cork
1. Dunbarry in the Civil parish of Bregoge in the Poor Law Union of Mallow. It consists of c 40 acres;
2. Dunbarry in the Civil parish of Churchtown in the Poor Law Union of Mallow. It consists of c108 acres.
No record found for "Dunbar". Can you include the names of the persons which might indicate an alternative location.

Kathryn,
In regard your query - "Dunbar", it may be "Dunbur" in County Wicklow in the Poor Law Union of Rathdrum in the Civil parish of Kilpoole. Dunbur Head and townlands Dunbur Lower and Dunbur Upper.

Thank you very much for your replies. The surnames of the people who were born there are Traynor/Trainer and Molloy, so I will look for those names in County Cork and County Wicklow to see if I can narrow it down. I've attached an extract of the census.

Kathyrn,
The surname "Traynor" was common in the 1850's in County Louth.
Could it possibly be "Dundalk" that was meant? It was one of the principal towns in County Louth.

Unfortunately, I've been unable to find any matching records for the people I'm looking for and other English census returns simply give Ireland as the date of birth. Thank you for your suggestions though; I will bear those in mind when I am searching in future.

The individuals I'm trying to locate don't appear in any English census records that match my search criteria, and when I look for their dates of birth, all I see is Ireland. Your recommendations are appreciated, and I will keep them in mind for future searches. gorilla tag
