Hello, Bridget Grady was married to John Grady in Ballintober, Ireland. They were married in 1865, but I was told that John died shortly after the birth of my mother's great grandmother, their daughter, Catherine,  in 1874 or 1877.  Bridget Hayden left for Massachusetts as a widow with her children.  There is a grave here in Taunton, MA, and the records state that she died in 1899.  A relative in England told me that she thinks he was buried in a graveyard in Ballintober, but there is no headstone.  Someone responded before with some information about his death in 1883, but it does not seem accurate.  It may be another John Grady.  If you have any info., I would really appreciate it.  Thanks!

    Roots Ireland also has the birth records for their three children, and they agree with the above death record.

    Parents are John Grady and Bridget Hayden. John's occupation - tailor.

    Attached is also their marriage record - you'll see a variation of Hayden spelling.

  • Thanks, Patricia and Carolyn, for your information.  This makes more sense than what I previously discovered.  It seems that John passed away a month after his daughter, Catherine, was born.  How sad!  Poor Bridget took the long journey to Massachusetts with the children.  

    If you have any advice on finding the cemetery where he is buried, please let me know.  It lists Castleplunket in the record.  A relative told me that she thought it was Ballintober.

    The website www.johngrenham.com is a good one to help decipher these places. It shows both the RC parishes and civil parishes. The townland of Ballyfinegan is in the Ballintober civil parish, barony of Castlereagh. The electoral division (ED) for that area is Castleplunkett. There is also a townland called Ballintober in the same civil parish as above. Also, www.townlands.ie is a great site for figuring locations.

    I searched Find a Grave for John's grave in St. Bride's catholic church, also known as Ballintober catholic church in Castlerea, but his name was not there.

  • Hi, Carolyn.  I just visited that church in June when I made my first trip to Ireland with my family.  A relative told me about St. Bride's.    We also walked into Garvey's Pub and talked to some nice people there.  It was like walking back in time (so quiet and peaceful with the beautiful scenery: farms, sheep, horses, stone walls, green fields...)  We also visited the general store at the corner.
