Following is the transcript of a baptismal record found on rootsireland.ie.  Is this the daughter of your Elizabeth Connelly Reilly?  If so, the family was living in Feragh townland in 1838.

I note that John Connolly married Ann Leonard in 1855, the first year of statutory registration in Scotland. Civil certificates that year contained some additional information, dropped in later years. For example the parties birthplaces. The certificate should also tell you whether their parents were alive or dead at that date. (It should say “dcd” after their names if dead). Useful to know if searching for the parents in Ireland.

No Connollys in Feragh in Griffiths Valuation (1860).

Thank you Elwyn I was never able to find the 1855 stat register  in Scotlands people, I do have the church register for the marriage in st Joseph’s Church

Glasgow, Sept 18, 1855 with priests signature. I was told by someone on another chat site that it was not a valid source and should not be relied on.

Everything else going forward is from Scotland peoples which are copies from original BDMs. I’ll give it another try though now that I’m working the file again. Thanks for your help. Cheers Ann

I can see the marriage on Scotlandspeople under RC marriages (John Conneley & Ann Leonard) but I don’t see a civil record of it, which is a pity.

The church version of the ceremony looks perfectly fine to me and would be regarded as a perfectly acceptable primary source that they married. Just it doesn’t contain the addition personal information you would find on a civil certificate, especially in 1855. It’s possible that this church, in the first year of civil registration, overlooked sending the necessary information to the civil registrar. (Something similar also happened in Ireland in the early days too, with early marriages, births & deaths not always being recorded).

FMP lists the marriage between John Reilly & Elizabeth Connolly on 11^th Dec 1838 in Monaghan parish. Witnesses appear to have been Felix Connolly and Florence(?) Connolly. Hard to make that second witness's name out, plus it has been translated into Latin.

Thanks Elwyn, I have the Glasgow census for 1851-1881, Elizabeth died in Glasgow in 1888 and John died before 1861 census date,I was sure I had the certificate but cant locate it right now. I see Ann on the 1861 Census aged 20

with 3 other siblings all living with mother at 90 High St in Glasgow. Trying to find where Ann went and who she married but Reilly is common in Glasgow. I also wonder if she stayed with her Grandparents and joined her mother when her father died. I have her Birth in Ireland but she wasn’t on the1851 census

with her family but shows in 1861 only.

I am Scottish by the way, Connolly is my husbands name, I’m a Sloss.

We both emigrated to Canada in 1960s with parents.
