Hello,  I'm attempting to find birth records of my great grandfather Patrick Towey from Ballaghaderreen possibly born in either 1863 or 1865 (?)  to James Towey and Margaret Johnston (from Kilmovee possibly?)  Patrick immigrated (sent for by an older brother (?) )  to my hometown of Katonah, NY as a teenager and married Margaret Dempsey (possibly born Anna Margaret Dempsey from Coleraine?) .  As there are several Patrick Toweys from the area in the mid 1860s, I have no idea of the parish, townland or diocese, and Ballaghaderreen was part of Mayo when he was born.   With many thanks!  George Mekeel in Youghal

  • The townland of Ballaghaderreen (now in Roscommon) is in the Catholic parish of Castlemore and Kilcolman, and the parish records which are available online (which appear to go far enough back for the dates you want) can be found at this link:

    If the mother was from Kilmovee (in Mayo), then her marriage probably took place there (weddings were usually held in the bride;s home parish).  You can use the interactive map at the above link to move to the records for Kilmovee, which go back far enough that you might well be able to find her marriage record, and maybe even a baptismal record for her there.

    Here's an Anna Margaret Jane Dempsey baptized in Coleraine in 1865. We'd need more info to say that it is definitely your Anna. For instance, were her parents Francis Dempsey and Sarah Hunter?
