My 3rd Great-grandfather's father was also called William Henry Jones and was a farmer probably in the Dunany area. Curious to know anything about Joneses in this area?

William Henry Jones Dunany

Hi,
Tracking my ancestors back, I have a William Henry Jones, born on 14th December 1798, in or near the town of Castle Bellingham in Dunany, Louth. At 18 he enlisted in the 48th Foot, The Northamptonshire regiment, in 1816 in Naas. William served in Australia and India, before finally settling in Wellington NZ, as barrack sergeant in his later years. I have his family tracked to the present but would like to know more about his father, also named William Henry Jones (a name that has currently been carried on for four generations in NZ). There's some suggestion he may also have been a retired soldier from the Northhamptonshire regiment who were 'recuperating' in Nass after a mauling they received in the American War of Independence. But seeing the posts from Dunany Jones, he may also have been a local. Any information would be appreciated.
Ps, he is also an ancestor of one of the very first All Blacks
Thanks

Hello Lester, I made a quick check of the 1901 census and there is one Jones family in Dunany, the head of house was born in Waterford and an Ex Mate age 50, ex mate to be indicates a retired Chief Officer or "The Mate" from a cargo vessel. There are a number of children and all are Church of Ireland, there is one other man living alone also in Dunany, there are other Jones in the general area of Drumcar.
The area is in mid Louth towards the coast and still rural in aspect. I live about 15 miles away but am not aware of any Jones in the area. but will ask some friends who reside around the nearby Clogherhead town, the parish here is called Port.
I take it you are only interested in any living Jones in the area.

Hi Pat, I have done my DNA with Ancestry and via this I am in contact with quite a few Jones Cousins. What I was hoping for is information on William H Jones b.1798, father, mother or any siblings that may have existed, perhaps taken over the farm. Was wondering if the Jones had been in the area for a while if any of the cemeteries nearby may contained some.
Thanks for your quick reply.
Regards
Lester

Hi Lester, at that remove it has to be church records so we need a religion, RC records at that remove are very scarce, a lot of Church of Ireland records were lost in the Four Courts fire in 1922 (start of civil war). However I attach the recordsd from Drogheda Church of Ireland (Protestant) sometimes other Presbyterians were facilitated in these churches, there are a lot of Jones (to my surprise) listed from about 1707 I think, there are a number of Williams but not in 1798. Here is the link https://www.ireland.anglican.org/about/rcb-library/online-parish-record…;
There is a site here about Louth and I see many Jones in it, some big shots too, also list of people whose graves have been transcribed in hardcopy somewhere (indicated on entry) I can access some of these if you see any of interest. It appears 1983 was a bad year for the Dunany Jones family as there are 3 deaths listed. The research library of Louth County Council in Dundalk also has resources for genealogy research.

Still to ask about any now but will revert.
