I have a 2x Great grandfather Edward Welsh who came from County Mayo and family stories say he came from the small town of Toormakeadie but I don't know which parish this is related to, especially as it seems part of Toormakeadie was once in Galway. This is quite confusing. I don't know where to place him and his wife, Mary Moran, and daughters Catherine and Bridget. I believe Mary died during the famine as Edward and daughters turn up in Stirling, Scotland where he married again in 1851. Any help much appreciated. Thank you.

  • Wikipedia says that Toormakeady is a Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking area) in Mayo as well as a village. It also says that parts of Toormakeady were once part of Galway but were transferred to Mayo in 1898. I hope this is helpful.  See below...

    Toormakeady[2] or Tourmakeady (Irish: Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, the official name)[3][4][5] is a Gaeltacht in south County Mayo in the west of Ireland. It is located between the shores of Lough Mask and the Partry Mountains, and covers 172.26 square kilometres (66.51 sq mi).[6] As at the time of the 2011 census, Toormakeady had a total population of 1,007, having dropped from 1,150 in 1991.[1][7][8] Toormakeady is also the name of the principal village in the area.

    Those parts of Ballinchalla Electoral District in Toormakeady and the whole of the Owenbrin Electoral District in Toormakeady together comprise nearly half of the land area of Toormakeady and were previously parts of County Galway. In 1898 they were transferred to County Mayo.

  • Further to previous Post, I attach a list of townlands in the parish of Ballyovey 1823 - 1837.

    Credit:  www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy

    You will get the names of tenants for each townland which may show a number of people working the same piece of land.

    Details of parish register attached which does not go back beyond 1869.

    There was a strong Protestant influence in the area, which may cause difficulty in identifying family.
