I have been researching my husbands ancestors and have found they came from Shanaknock.  Unfortunately the family name is Ryan so a bit like Smith in the UK.  I have found Census reports showing family at that time living in Shanaknock but would like to find some information on this townland.  We are planning to come over to Ireland sometime this year and would like to know best way to continue my research.  Any tips would be gratefully appreciated.

Kind regards

Lynda

  • Lynda,

Here's some info about the townland: https://www.townlands.ie/cork/duhallow/drishane/coomlogane/shanaknock/

Why not tell us the info you have about your Ryans? I've researched many Irish families with common names. I myself had a John Ryan who came to NY in the 1840s and managed to trace him to his baptism in Dublin City and found his parents and grandparents too.

  • Hi, I think Lynda said Shanaknock, Tipperary, it's north of Tipperary Town.

    Shanaknock Townland, Co. Tipperary (townlands.ie)

I agree Patricia, you do need a bit more information such as the year they left for England, Christian names and approx. year of births.
The years matter as you have to search a few areas and sites.

  • Lynda,

Please ignore my link to Shanaknock in Cork!  The Tipperary link is the correct one.
