Hi
I am trying g to find information on my ancestor, John McDonnell born circa 1852. The only information I have is that his father's name was Michael. He arrived in Australia in about 1877. I'm afraid I do have have any other information other than his children's names which may give a hint to his family in Ireland. His children were: Margaret Annie, Mary Ellen,James Michael, Elizabeth Jane, Rose, Patrick. If anyone has any suggestions they would be appreciated. Thank you
Margie

Hi Mayo has many mcdonnell families, mostly in the North of the county, my great grandfather was a mcdonnell (michael), you will find irish names (same) were used/passed down generation to generation. North mayo heritage centre near crossmolina is a good place to start.

The names is also very common in north east Co Antrim where most McDonnells there are descendants of Scots who moved from Kintyre, Islay and adjacent islands, in the 1500s.

Margie:
There are many John McDonnells baptized around 1852 with a father Michael. If you don't have his mother's maiden name then I would suggest that you test your DNA. You will get matches and hopefully you were get some 3rd cousin matches on your McDonnell line. These matches may have more info on the origin of your family in Ireland.
