Is there a way to identify where Brickfield, Martry is? I am researching the family of John Monaghan and there are numerous civil records and Bohermeen church records showing residence as Brickfield. (sample attached)

  • Brian,

You should contact Meath County Archives - email colibrarmeathcoco.ie - Telephone: 353469021134.

  • Brian,

I have not received a reply from the Meath County Library, as yet.

Checking out church and civil records I found that Rose Monaghan is recorded as Brickfield in 1865, Anne as Martry 1870 and John as Martry 1878.

Griffith's Valuation has a Joseph Monaghan farming c4 acres of land in the townland of Martry - www.askaboutireland.ie/Griffith's - Free site

It is possible that John Monaghan is a son of this Joseph?

    McCoy,

Thank you very much for the info and for contacting the library on my behalf.

I've been searching for my GGrandfather Joseph Monaghan ~1822 for many years and I'm hopeful I may be able to confirm that his family is the family recorded in house 28 of the 1821 census for Martry. I have 3 DNA matches that I believe may be descendants of my GGrandfather Joseph's brothers. Two matches are descendants of John Monaghan ~1826 and one a descendent of Nicholas Monaghan ~1815. The Martry location is consistent with the Griffith Valuation record and John's widow Rose and unmarried children are recorded in the 1901 & 1911 Census in Martry but hard to confirm it's the same property in all of these records.  I have not been able locate baptisms as the birth years don't appear to be available in Bohermeen records. I did find marriage records for John (Rose Duffy) & Nicholas (Catherine Lynch) but none for Joseph.

I hope to come to Ireland and visit their original townland when I solve this decades long mystery.

Thank you for all your assistance.

    Brian

    Brian,

Map showing Brickfield, Martry, courtesy of Tom at County Meath Local Studies.

Comment: Attached is the location of Brickfield, which a Martry Historian tells me, was the land attached to Martry House, a residence of the Tisdall family.  Tom

  • Excellent!  That is where I was guessing it was but had no way to validate.  The lot that is 2 lots back from the Martry House shows as Joseph Monaghan in the Griffiths Valuation.

Thank you McCoy for your assistance!
