This obituary lists their birthplace as Kilskeny, County Tyrone, but is it possibly Kilskeery?
John died in 1915 at age 87, making his birth ca, 1828
His wife Ellen died in 1909. Her death certificate lists Antrim, Ireland as birthplace ca. 1830 . Her father as James McDonald, her mother's maiden name as Ohara.

GGG, Did the McDonalds stay in Ireland? Or did they emigrate and if so to where? What were their children's names?

I cannot be certain, as Ellen McDonald Kelly, my Great Great Grandmother does not list any other family members other than husband and children on an 1861 Ontario (Upper Canada) census. It does list their daughter at 4 years old having been born in the U.S., so I can place them in America in 1857, with a move to Canada by 1861, and then settling on a property in the Muskokas, Ontario, Canada. It was a land grant and a small section of the original property remains in my hands today. My assumption is they married in Ireland, emigrated into the U.S. from Ireland prior to 1857, and thence to Canada.

I found a 1901 census listing for John Kelly and Mary Ann (MacDonald) Kelly with their children. in 1901 the Canadian government began to include a question about immigration year, and John and Mary Ann stated 1850 as their year of immigration. They would have been 20 years old, and newly married I expect.

On the 1901 census they give their birthdates as John - 15 Sep 1828, and Mary Ann 18 Sep 1828

Was his wife Ellen or Mary Ann?

Sorry, John's wife is Ellen, Mary Ann is their daughter - confusion sets in the later at night it gets ;-)
