My gg grandmother Kate (Catherine) Grady apparently came from Tarbert, Co Kerry. The family was Catholic.

Which parish is Tarbert?

  • Tarbert is in the Electoral Division of Tarbert, in Civil Parish of Kilnaughtin, in the Barony of Iraghticonnor, in the County of Kerry

  • Thank you both.

Kate Grady is a mystery for baptism. Supposedly born Tipperary in 1849. No idea why it was Tipperary, not Tarbert, Murhur, Leitrim.

I found marriage for parents John GRADY (also Graddy), labourer and Catherine HEALY 9th Feb 1832 Murhur; Catherine from Leitrim.

Other chn: John b1832 Tarbert; Patrick b1834 Murhur; Mary b1836 Leitrim; Bridget b1838 Kerry; Johanna b1842 Tarbert; then gg gm Kate born 1849 Tipperary but in family stories always said she was from Tarbert.

Patrick b1834 and Julia HENNESSY married in RC parish of Ardagh, Co Limerick in 1859. This couple and Patrick's siblings including my gg gm Kate Grady then emigrated to Western Australia per 'Strathallan' in 1862.

Have always wondered if Kate's birthplace of Tipperary was correct.

  • Colleen:

I was confused by the Leitrim location in your note thinking it was Co. Leitrim. Then I saw that there Murhur is the parish just south of Kilnaughtin and there are a couple of Leitrim townlands in Murhur parish. The RC parish for the area is Moyvane but records begin in 1855 so no baptismal records would be available for the Grady children. Like you, I'm pretty sure that Kate was born and baptized in Co. Kerry with her siblings.
