Hello
My name is Jennie Duke. My great, great grandmother was born in County Cork in 1863. She came to Australia as 'remittance woman'. Her name was Mary O'Donovan. I was wondering if anyone could help me understand more about what a 'remittance woman' was?
Regards
Jennie

Jennie,
The Elizabethan Reference Dictionary has a definition of a "Remittance-Man" as an emigrant depending
on remittances from home for his living.
It probably means that your GG grandmother was in receipt of money from home, as she was unable to work?
