  • Owen and his family arrived in England in time to appear in the 1851 Census. His wife Roseanna (born Rogers)and three sons accompanied him on this relocation. I cannot accept that they only had three sons and there must be other children I am unaware of. The sons as they appeared in the 1851 census were John, James and my namesake-Owen. I recollect an aunt, who said that we were from Kerry, but no other information was forthcoming. All the census information regarding place of birth was generally Ireland. Is this because the enumerators or census takers couldn't understand the "brogue" and the tongue-twisting names of parishes and townlands and opted to record an easy cop-out by entering Ireland as the place of birth? I am assuming that most Irish families that arrived in this country at that time were not educated and wouldn't have been able to help the enumerator with the spelling of their place of birth. My aunt also informed me that Eugene was the traditional family Christian name.

I would be grateful if anyone could point me to the way forward in my research as all roads end in the Irish Sea.
