He settled in Bearbrook, Canada in 1832, with a group of Irish settlers from Westmeath and Longford Counties. He married Dorothy Welsh (Walsh) (born 1816) in Ireland and they had two children there before emigrating to Canada: Ann and Lydia.

Their third child, Andrew, was born Aug 24, 1830, in Argenteuil County, Lower Canada (Quebec).  In the 1831 Census for Lower Canada, 2 faiths are identified for a family of 6: Presbyterian and Baptist.
