I have been searching any information about my 3xGt Grandfather Thomas Conboy, born in Galway abt1798 and his wife Elizabeth (possibly Light) also born in Galway abt 1797.

They had a son, Andrew, born in Galway abt 1825.

Their next son, Thomas Francis was born in England in 1827 so I am guessing they emigrated between 1825 and 1827.

All their subsequent children were born in England, but before Civil Registration.

I've no clue to the parish but Thomas Francis was later transported to Van Dieman's Land and he mentions Roscommon in some documentation about origin. The UK censuses all state birthplaces as Galway so it could be a parish on the border.

There were some Conboys that moved to the USA but I cannot find any connection.

Both children mentioned, Andrew & Thomas Francis, served in the British Army, Andrew having been killed in Colaba, India in 1849 so he is definitely not the Andrew Conboy who emigrated to the USA.

I've seen a few Conboy entries in the Tithe & Loan records but they are all a bit late (or post 1825-1827) and I cannot corroborate.

My understanding is that they were Catholic.

ANY information would be gratefully received.

Thank you in anticipation.

  • Conboy Family:

The earliest Andrew Conboy baptismal record anywhere in Ireland is in 1848 in Ballinlough RC parish which does border Co. Galway. The earliest Thomas Conboy marriage was in 1831.

Have you taken a DNA test? If not, you may want to consider a test which will produce matches. Possibly you will have third or fourth cousins on the Conboy line who know more about the family in Ireland.

  • Thank you for your reply and the information

I have taken a DNA test and have many 3rd & 4th cousins but I've yet to trace the lines of most of them.

Maybe one day I'll find a clue to the parish from whence they came, if I'm lucky.

  • Conboy Family,

Attached records may be of assistance. The surnames Conboy and Tighe are in North County Galway and Roscommon - Barony of Ballymoe. There is a baptism of an Thomas Conboy in Southwark in 1826 - Father: Thomas Conboy and Mother: Elizabeth Tighe. Any connection?

  • Thank you so much for this information. I'm pretty certain that the baptism for Thomas Francis in Southwark is their second son. I have details of his conviction and transportation but I didn't know how he got to mainland Australia, so that's a bonus too. I don't suppose you are able to translate from the latin the wording of the baptism record? I assume that the other names are God parents but it would be nice to confirm this.

The fact that it also confirms Elizabeth's maiden name is such a bonus. I have never been able to do that before although there are marriages to other Tighes in later generations.

Their son Andrew was born 1825 and died in 1849 in India. He was serving in the British Army. However I wonder if the Andrew Conboy who died in 1798 in Southwark might have been a relative as that is where the family settled when the emigrated from Ireland in 1825/26.

I also wonder if Andrew Tighe who took out the loan might have been Elizabeth's father.

I can't tell you how appreciative I am for this information. It also narrows down the area from which they probably came, Ballymoe. Thank you so much.
